Jarry, Crosby Skate but OUT for Game 6; Rakell a game-time decision

Sidney Crosby and Tristan Jarry won’t play in Game 6.

UPDATE: Head coach Mike Sullivan said that Jarry was a full participant in the morning skate but won’t play in Game 6. Sullivan also said Crosby skated with skills coach Ty Hennes before the morning skate, which would seem to be a good sign that opens the door to appear in a Game 7, if necessary.

“When Tristan’s ready to play, and everybody feels comfortable that he’s ready, we’ll put him in the lineup,” Sullivan said of Jarry.

Sullivan also said Rickard Rakell, who participated in the morning skate but didn’t take part in line rushes, which was a game-time decision.

Earlier this week, Jarry skated for the first time since suffering a suspected broken foot on April 14. This week, the Penguins No. 1 goalie made rapid progress from taking soft shots to real wristers from teammates on Friday morning during the Penguins morning skate.

The Penguins host the New York Rangers in Game 6 of their Round One series Friday night at PPG Paints Arena.

While it isn’t a guarantee and sometimes isn’t much of an indicator, Jarry took the starter’s net while Louis Domingue anchored it in the visitor’s end.

Jarry stayed on the ice after the morning skate.

Jarry hasn’t faced live competition since his foot injury on April 14. Domingue is 3-2 with a .900 save percentage and 3.56 GAA. Penguins backup goalie Casey DeSmith suffered a lower-body injury in Game 1 and required core-muscle surgery. DeSmith is likely out until next season.

The Penguins lost Game 5 in New York despite leading 2-0 late in the second period. Captain Sidney Crosby was knocked out of the game by a high hit from Jacob Trouba. The Rangers were emboldened while the Penguins scrambled to replace Crosby in their lines.

New York scored three goals in less than three minutes, then used an early third period power play for the game-winner in a 5-3 win. The Penguins lead the series 3-2.

Trouba was not penalized by the NHL.

Jarry saw his first playoff action last season in Round One against the New York Islanders. Jarry stopped only .888 of the shots and had a 3.18 GAA. His performance was roundly criticized or defended as a playoff novice’s introduction to the big stage.

Sydney Crosby

All players except Crosby and Brian Dumoulin were on the ice for the 20-minute Pittsburgh Penguins morning skate.

Sullivan also said Dumoulin was continuing his rehab off the ice.

Crosby’s status has not yet been defined, other than “being evaluated for an upper-body injury” on Thursday. Evgeni Malkin played between Bryan Rust and Jake Guentzel for the remainder of Game 5. Head coach Mike Sullivan could put Brian Boyle in the middle of the fourth line or slide Evan Rodrigues into one of the pivot spots.

In the morning skate, Rodrigues took the second-line center spot with Danton Heinen and Kasperi Kapanen. Rodrigues also took the spot on the top power-play unit. This season, Rodrigues had 43 points, including 19 goals.

Malkin has five points (2-3-5) in five games this series, and PHN graded his defensive work well in Game 5.
