Anna Wintour certainly didn’t approve of this Met Gala guest.
A cockroach went viral after crashing fashion’s biggest night on Monday, and swooped down the red carpet before falling victim to a trample. The entire story was captured by reporters at the scene and shared on social media.
In a video and Twitter thread by diversePhotographer Kevin Mazur was seen taking a picture of the insect before trying to crush it with his shoe. It isn’t long before the red carpet is brimming with star power, as A-listers present the latest in fashion and glamor in honor of the late Karl Lagerfeld. The public (read: red carpet) side of the evening is the highlight of the event. Guests walk the museum’s steps through their fashionable choices in costume before heading inside, where press, phones and social media are strictly prohibited.
The theme for this year’s Met Gala was “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty” and it celebrated the late designer’s full work and entire life. The dress code was “in honor of Karl”.
After the topic was announced in September, it sparked a backlash over Lagerfeld’s allegedly problematic past comments, including in 2009 that “nobody wants to see women around the world.” In 2018, he also said he was “tired” of the #MeToo movement.
The co-chairs of the spring fashion event, officially named the Metropolitan Museum of Art Institute Benefit, were Michaela Cowell, Penelope Cruz, Dua Lipa, Roger Federer, and Vogue magazine Editor-in-Chief Wintour, known for hand-curating the guest list. The annual gala is a fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
The simultaneous exhibition—which opens to the public May 5 and ends July 16—features 150 of Lagerfeld’s designs from Chanel, Balmain, Bateau, Fendi, and Chloé as well as his personal line and accompanying sketches. Chanel’s creative director passed away in February 2019 at the age of 85.
