‘Rafael Nadal can serve and volley quite well’, says expert
World No. 45 Nick Kyrgios says European players have the advantage of playing clay court tournaments in Europe all year round and adds that they can be well into the top-100 for the points they earn. In recent years, Kyrgios hasn’t played much and is taking a similar approach in 2022.
This week, Kyrgios wants to compete on the grass courts of Mallorca. After competing in just four tournaments in the first five months of the season, Kyrgios began his grass-court season by competing in Stuttgart and Halle. Now, Kyrgios is set to play his third grass-court tournament in as many weeks.
“European players can play on clay all year round and finish like 70th in the world. And they don’t even have to go out. While an Australian player has to travel six months a year and not see his family or his friends.
I’ve played five events this year and I’m like 50 in the world and I have to travel,” Kyrgios was quoted as saying by Essentially Sports. “So if I have six grass courts in Australia, I would never leave the country .
I would never leave the country. Why would I leave the country? I don’t even know some of the top 100 guys.” Second seed Rafael Nadal won the Wimbledon Championships in 2008 and 2010.
Nadal won the Wimbledon Championships twice
Rafael Nadal has stuck to his plans and recovered just in time for the grasscourt Major, which kicks off on June 27.
“This footage (Nadal practicing) of Rafa, it’s just something that puts a smile on everyone’s face. The guy is such an inspiration. He is still playing unbelievable tennis, 14th French Open, going for a Calendar Slam this year at this age absolutely mind boggling.
We don’t know how many opportunities we’re going to get to watch him on the court. So now, I think every single time he steps on the court, it’s a true event. It’s very special that we’re going to see him at Wimbledon,” Amritraj said.
“Hopefully the grass is a little bit softer on his foot, maybe the points are a little bit shorter. He is one of the guys who has a tremendous amount of experience which not a lot of other people have. He’s a very underrated volleyer, he can serve and volley quite well, uses that backhand slice well.
So perhaps someone not everyone’s thinking of as a favorite for Wimbledon, but who knows? He’s won the thing twice. Why not a third? He has done everything else impossible in this sport,” said Amritraj.
