Serena Williams has confirmed she’s pregnant with a second child, telling reporters at the star-studded Met Gala in New York that there were “three of us” on the red carpet, where she arrived with husband Alexis Ohanian.
The 23-time grand slam winner declared last year that she is “evolving away from tennis,” writing in a Vogue article that she wants to grow her family after welcoming daughter Olympia in 2017.
“I was thrilled when Anna Wintour invited the three of us to the Met Gala,” Williams said in a TikTok post Monday night.
Williams, a longtime friend of Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief of Vogue and co-chair of the Met Gala, is a frequent attendee of the annual benefit event for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, and on Monday wore a form-fitting black gown with a white skirt.
The theme for this year’s ceremony was “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” a tribute to the late Chanel designer.
Red carpet footage showed Ohanian, the entrepreneur and Reddit co-founder, gently placing his hand on the 41-year-old Williams’ midsection.
The announcement made a return to competitive tennis highly unlikely for Williams, one of the most decorated athletes ever to pick up a racket.
Fellow tennis player Roger Federer, dressed in a black suit and dark sunglasses, and former US Open champion Andy Roddick, dressed in a similar black dinner suit but with dress slippers, were among the handful of high-profile athletes in attendance.
Also at the event were American basketball star Brittney Griner, who returned to the United States after being held for nearly 10 months in a Russian penal colony, as well as Ellen Guo, Chinese Olympic figure skating champion.
