Serena Williams announces her pregnancy on the Met Gala red carpet

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Serena Williams confirmed she is expecting her second child on Monday, telling reporters at the star-studded Met Gala in New York that there were “three of us” on the red carpet where she arrived with husband Alexis Ohanian.

The 23-time winner declared last year that she is “evolving away from tennis,” writing in a Vogue article that she wants to grow her family after welcoming daughter Olympia in 2017.

“I was thrilled when Anna Wintour invited the three of us to the Met Gala,” Williams said in a TikTok post Monday night.

Williams, a longtime friend of Wintour, editor-in-chief of Vogue and co-chair of the Met Gala, is a frequent attendee of the annual benefit event for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, and on Monday donned a matching black outfit. A dress with a white skirt.

The theme for this year’s ceremony was “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” a tribute to the late Chanel designer.

She had a friend on the red carpet too, as retired 20-time Grand Slam winner Roger Federer attended as co-chair of the event.

Red carpet footage showed Ohanian, the entrepreneur and Reddit co-founder, gently placing his hand on the 41-year-old Williams’ midsection.

The announcement made a return to competitive tennis highly unlikely for Williams, one of the most decorated athletes ever to pick up a racquet.
