Target donated $2.1 million to an LGBTI advocacy group that has pressured school districts not to tell parents if their children are of another race, according to an online report from Fox News Digital.
The retail giant, which has been the subject of widespread boycott calls in the wake of protests over the “PRIDE” group, has partnered with the Lesbian and Lesbian Education Network (GLSEN), an educators’ group founded in 1990 with the goal of “creating affirming learning environments for LGBTQ youth” .
GLSEN has also opposed efforts by lawmakers to ban LGBTQ books with sexually explicit themes.
“GLSEN is leading the movement in creating affirmative, anti-racism spaces for LGBTQIA+ students. We are proud of our more than 10 years of collaboration with GLSEN and continue to support their mission,” said Target.
“Target and GLSEN share the belief that all children deserve the opportunity to learn and thrive in a safe environment,” said Laysha Ward, Executive Vice President and Director of Corporate Social Responsibility for Target.
“The voices and stories of the students and teachers in this documentary show how far we have come as a nation and give us hope that all students can reach their full potential and be proud of who they are.”
GLSEN was among the organizations urging states and school districts to refrain from notifying parents when students decide to “social transition” between their genders.
School leaders told The Washington Post that failure to notify parents is necessary to avoid letting children who might be in harm’s way down the house.
One controversial practice used by some schools in at least 18 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico is to have teachers use new transgender names for children in class but then revert to the original “dead” names when speaking with parents.
The secrecy surrounding the sex of the children has prompted numerous lawsuits in states such as Massachusetts, Florida, Wisconsin, Kansas, Virginia, and Maryland.
GLSEN also urged teachers to intervene if children are drawing drawings or pictures that include gender to ensure they align with gender ideology.
“How to Make Your Math Class More Inclusive of Trans and Non-binary Identities,” GLSEN wrote in a blog post.
“[A]If students want to include data on gender, they must include a variety of options, such as Agender, Genderfluid, Female, Male, Nonbinary, Transgender, Transgender, and more.”
The post requested comment from Target and GLSEN.
Target said Tuesday it was removing some items from its stores and making other changes to LGBTQ+ merchandise across the country ahead of Pride month after backlash from some customers who confronted workers tearing up displays.
“Since introducing this year’s kit, we have faced threats affecting our team members’ sense of safety and well-being while on the job,” Target said in a statement on Tuesday.
Target has lost more than $9 billion in market value since angry social media users called for a boycott of the Minneapolis-based retailer over its “PRIDE” collection of clothing suitable for gay children.
