Teenage jockey Hannah Serfas dies after an accident at Fox Lea Ranch

A 15-year-old girl died in central Florida on Sunday, following an equestrian accident while riding in competition at Fox Lea Ranch in southern Sarasota County.

Hannah Servas was riding Quaxx 2, a 12-year-old Holsteiner, in a hunt/jump competition when the horse tripped and fell, according to a statement from the United States Equestrian Federation.

“The fall has nothing to do with the effort of the jump,” the statement reads.

The Webster teen was a member of the Wildwood Middle High School Track Team.

A Sumter County school official confirmed her identity Monday, but clarified that she was in fact homeschooled and involved in extracurricular activities at the school. “The track team was very involved with her, relatable with her,” said Jessica Christian, superintendent of curriculum for the Sumter County School District.
