(CNN) An 18-year-old University of Texas baseball player was seriously injured after being hit by a stray bullet during a game Saturday, according to police.
Police said Matthew Delaney, a student-athlete at Texas A&M University in Texarkana, was standing in the parking lot when he was hit. He was taken to hospital after the accident and is currently in stable condition.
The university was facing the University of Houston Victoria at George Dobson Field in Spring Lake Park in Texarkana, according to social media posts from the school and the Texarkana Police Department.
Police said the shot was believed to have been fired during an altercation in a neighborhood west of the park.
Police said Delaney was taken to hospital for surgery. He is currently in the intensive care unit and in stable condition at Christus St. Michael Hospital in Texarkana, John Bunch, the university’s director of communications, told CNN Monday.
“We think it’s important to note that he had a number of serious injuries, as would be expected from this type of trauma,” Bunch said. “He has made minor improvements daily but still has major injuries and complications that need to be overcome.”
DeMarco Banks, 20, turned himself in after police issued a fatal conduct warrant for his alleged involvement in the shooting.
Texarkana police have issued criminal warrants for two suspects believed to be involved in the incident.
Police said on Facebook that a fatal conduct warrant has been issued for 20-year-old DeMarco Banks, who turned himself in overnight and is being booked at B-State Jail. An aggravated assault order has been issued for a 17-year-old whose whereabouts have not yet been determined.
Banks appeared before a justice of the peace and his bond was set at $100,000, according to the Bowie County sheriff’s office and a search of Bowie County Jail records. CNN was unable to determine whether Banks had an attorney at this time.
The incident began as a “turmoil” between Banks and the 17-year-old that led to them shooting each other, and one of the “errant rounds traveled about 400 yards and struck the innocent victim in the ballpark,” he reported.
