Uncanny Elisabeth Moss Lookalike Wows the Internet: ‘Praise Be’
Every human being is unique, but with more than 7 billion people on Earth, it’s no surprise that some of us may occasionally come face-to-face with a remarkable lookalike.
One woman’s uncanny similarity to a celebrity has wowed the internet. In March this year, Stephanie Amick from Indianapolis, Indiana, shared a video on TikTok where she revealed her incredible likeness to actress Elisabeth Moss.
With more than 2 million views, TikTok users were left in awe. “Oh my god. Twins,” said one viewer of the viral video.
Elisabeth Moss found fame in AMC series madmen, and more recently starred in the world hit series The Handmaid’s Tale. The 39-year-old actress has won three Critics’ Choice Awards, two Golden Globes and two Primetime Emmy Awards.
Amick told Newsweek: “I remember posting a picture of myself while on vacation back in 2017 which would have been a month after The Handmaid’s Tale started airing. Multiple family members and friends started commenting that I looked like Elisabeth Moss so that was the first time I heard the compared.”
“I actually thought you were her,” said one commenter on the viral TikTok video. Another viewer said: “You look more like her than she does.”
Approached by a Fan
One day when Amick was shopping in her local grocery store, a woman stopped her and said: “I’m sorry but I have to ask, are you Elisabeth Moss?”
“I of course told her I wasn’t and she said she was wondering why I’d be doing my own grocery shopping,” Amick explained: “Since then, I usually get the comments a lot around the time new episodes are released. I’m super flattered by the comparison. She’s an obviously talented and beautiful actress so it’s hard not to be.”
To create the now-viral image, Amick utilized a popular TikTok filter that allows users to merge their faces into an image. The Shapeshifting filter has been used on the video-sharing app more than 940,000 times to create videos of their own celebrity lookalikes.
Elsewhere online, finding your celebrity doppelganger is a popular pastime—with sites and apps using AI face recognition software to match people to a celebrity face.
“I was sitting in my car after a run waiting for a curbside order and scrolling through TikTok when I saw various similar videos trending,” Amick explained: “To appease my own curiosity I decided to record one shapeshifting into her. Once I did I thought ‘wow, ok, I kind of do look like her,’ so I posted it.”
Within a few minutes, Amick was receiving tons of notifications, and months later says she is still seeing likes and comments on the video every day.
“If I would’ve thought for a second it would get the views it did, I would’ve at least put on a little makeup,” she joked: “But the reactions have been mostly flattering and comical references to the show. I ‘ve enjoyed reading them.”
One TikTok commenter exclaimed: “You look just like her,” while other viewers made reference to The Handmaid’s Tale and wrote: “Praise be,” and “Blessed be the fruit.”
