Upcoming Open-World Dune Game Releases First Official Render, Concept Art

Funcom has launched a new website and released the first concept art for an upcoming survival game based on Frank Herbert’s Dune universe.

A new Dune game is in development, and the first pieces of concept art have been released along with the game’s website.

Funcom launched the website in part to recruit new talent for the development team, but the website also displays two pieces of concept art and one CGI render from the game. All the images feature the desert planet from Frank Herbert’s novels, with a dusty, orange-and-yellow light permeating each scene. “Frank Herbert’s timeless sci-fi masterpiece and the 2021 Oscar-winning movie adaptation have inspired whole generations with the Dune universe, and we are no exception,” the developer says. “It is the perfect setting for the multiplayer open world survival game.”

Each piece of concept art features a character interacting with the world of Dune. One has a figure entering a glistening black spaceship, their cape blowing in the wind as they stare at an “ornithopter” in the distance. Another shows someone in a spacesuit standing under a striking rock formation, with a sandstorm blackening the air behind them. In the CGI render, a man holding a dangerous-looking climbing tool stands in the desert, ready to defend himself. The man is wearing one of Dune’s “Fremen Stillsuits,” necessary for survival in the harsh environments of the land.

the Dune game was first announced in 2019, but the developers have yet to reveal an official title. Funcom has called the project “next-gen,” and the website is advertising for at least 22 positions, including Lead Concept Artist, Lead Gameplay Programmer, World Director and Marketing Director. Although Funcom said it has little to reveal, the website leaves a few clues for fans by inviting them to “shape a world made boundless by its deep lore” and “realize the dream of traversing its ever-shifting landscape.”
